ABSTRACT:

Statement of the Problem: A study to assess the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation techniques on stress among the clients with substance abuse in FfIRE – Jeevodhaya De Addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre, Coimbatore. Objectives of the Study: a) To assess the level of stress among clients with substance abuse. B) To administer mindfulness meditation techniques among clients with substance abuse. C) To evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation techniques on stress among clients with substance abuse. D) To find out the association between the selected demographic variables with the post-test stress score of clients with substance abuse. Methodology: one group pre-testpost-test experimental group design. The samples for this study consist of 30 clients with substance abuse selected by probability simple random sampling subtype lottery method. Modified DASS stress assessment scale was used to assess the level of stress among clients with substance abuse before and after practicing mindfulness meditation techniques. Result: 30 samples were enrolled in this study. The descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the value. The calculated ‘t’ value (10.29) for the group regarding the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation techniques on stress was higher than the table value. Conclusion: The intervention provided shows significant reduction in stress level among the clients with substance abuse with stress. The post-test shows that decreased stress level among the group.

INTRODUCTION:

‘‘Stress is a trash of modern life. We all generate it but if you don’t dispose it properly, it will pile up and overtake your life”

People deal with stress in different ways. Some people use exercise or sport as a means of working off their stress whereas others prefer something more relaxing. But their other people who turn to less beneficial forms of relaxation. The effects of stress combined with the effects of the substance which can easily spiral out of control. Drugs are often used as a quick way of releasing stress and tension.5

OBJECTIVES:

·       To assess the level of stress among clients with substance abuse.

·       To administer mindfulness meditation techniques among clients with substance abuse.

·       To evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation techniques on stress among clients with substance abuse.

·       To find out the association between the selected demographic variables with the post-test stress score of clients with substance abuse.

HYPOTHESIS:

There is a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test stress level among the clients with substance abuse after administering mindfulness meditation techniques.

METHODOLOGY:

Research Approach:

Quantitative research approach.

Research Design:

Quasi experimental, one group pre-test post-test research design was adopted for this study.

Research Setting:

The Study was conducted in FfIRE – Jeevodhaya De Addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre, Coimbatore

Population:

The total group of individual people or things meeting the designated criteria of interest to the researcher. The population of the study includes the clients withsubstance abuse in FfIRE – Jeevodhaya De Addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre at Coimbatore.

Sample Size:

The sample size selected for the present study was 30 clients

Sampling Technique:

The sampling technique used for this study was non-probability simple random technique.

Data Analysis Plan:

The collected data was analysed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULTS:

Major Findings of The Study:

Major Findings of the Study are as Follows:

·       The pre-test mean value of stress on client with substance abuse was 76.

·       The post-test mean value of stress on client with substance abuse was 51.

·       The stress level of client with substance abuse before administration of mindfulness meditation technique 3(10%) had severe stress, 18(60%) had moderate stress, 9(30%) had mild stress and no one had no stress.

·       In other hand post test revealed that after administering mindfulness meditation technique there was a significant reduction in stress level. Where in the post-test 2(6.67%) had severe stress, 8(26.27%) had moderate stress, 11(36.67%) had mild stress and 9(30%) had no stress.

·       This shows that there was a marked difference between the pre-test scores and post test scores hence the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation technique on minimizing stress is proved.

·       The calculated ‘t’ value for comparison of stress score on client’s stress was 10.29 at 29 degree of freedom 0.05% level of significance, this shows that mindfulness meditation techniques effective to reduce the stress among clients with substance abuse.

CONCLUSION:

The mean pre- test score of stress was high (76) after the practice of mindfulness meditation techniques it was declined to a low mean post test score (51). The findings showed that a mindfulness meditation technique was effective to reduce stress among client with substance abuse. Chi square test was computed for post test score with selected demographic variables which revealed that there was an association between stress and the demographic variable and age, educational status and duration of substance abuse.
